Man Utd 'looking at Sterling should Man City receive ban from Champions League'
Manchester United will make a shock move for Raheem Sterling should Manchester City's two-year ban from the Champions League is upheld, according to reports.
UEFA announced in February that City would be banned from playing in any of the club competitions for the next two seasons following serious breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.
However, the Premier League champions are set to appeal their ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport early next week on June 8.
Should City lose their appeal and their ban is upheld, the club could face losing some of their star players, who will leave in search of playing in Europe's elite club competition elsewhere.
Sterling has been one of the players earmarked to leave and has already been linked with a move to Real Madrid should City face expulsion from the Champions League.
While a move would appear unlikely, it hasn't stopped United from monitoring the situation and would likely make a move for the 25-year-old if he did become available, according to the Independent.
The report suggests that the England international is being closely watched by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the Red Devils' analytics department but acknowledges that Real would be the player's first choice of destination.
It goes on to suggest that Jesse Lingard's time at the club is also up and may be allowed to leave the club this summer.
The England international has been 'in regular contact' with Chris Smalling and Ashley Young about the prospect of joining the duo in Italy.
AC Milan are said to be interested in the attacking midfielder.
Meanwhile, in more immediate business, United fans were provided with the news on Monday that Odion Ighalo would be extending his loan stay at the club until January 2021.
United agreed a £6million fee with Shanghai Shenhua and will continue to pay just under half of Ighalo's £300,000-a-week wages.
The extension comes after problems over the player's return to China convinced the Chinese Super League club - who will receive a total of £10.5m, with the £6m loan fee and £130,000-a-week salary combined - to let him stay at Old Trafford.
There is no option or obligation for United to buy the 30-year-old striker when his new deal runs out on January 31.
