Sheff Utd boss Wilder says Manchester United have been toughest opponents of the season
Chris Wilder has described Sheffield United's chastening 3-0 defeat by Manchester United as the 'toughest' match his side have faced all season.
Wilder and his side are aiming to upset the elite and seal European football this season, but have struggled to return to their previous form that had seen them keeping pace with the top four before the coronavirus pandemic struck.
Since their return to action, they have been held to a goalless draw by Aston Villa and were soundly beaten by Newcastle United at St James' Park.
And the Blades now find themselves slumped down in eighth position in the table after Anthony Martial's performance put them to the sword on Wednesday evening.
Despite having faced the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool already this season, the United boss insists that Old Trafford has been the toughest trip to date.
'It was one of the toughest, if not the toughest, nights of the season,' Wilder told talkSPORT.
'You have got to come here on a night like this, especially when you are not in the greatest of form, to give yourself a platform to build and get a foothold in the game.
'Obviously that didn't happen after two or three minutes going a goal down. Turning the ball over as cheaply as we did to world class players we are inviting pressure on and you are going to invite opportunities and they've got some unbelievable players.
'If you do that it's going to be a difficult evening for you. I thought we had a decent little period midway through the first half but that's all, a little period.'
