Mason Greenwood and Billy Gilmour among top 100 nominees for 2020 Golden Boy award

Mason Greenwood, Billy Gilmour and a host of other Premier League names have been nominated for the prestigious European Golden Boy award.

The Manchester United and Chelsea starlets will battle it out for the coveted award but face some fierce competition from Borussia Dortmund's star duo Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland, who are the favourites to win the gong.

The 100-strong list was announced on Monday and will be whittled down in the coming months until a winner is announced later this year.

Haaland exploded onto the scene with RB Salzburg, scoring hat-tricks for fun in the Austrian top-flight and Champions League, before securing a winter move to Dortmund where he continues to excel in the goalscoring charts.

The Norwegian striker and Sancho continue to dominate defences in Germany, earning them their statuses as some of the world's most promising footballers.

Meanwhile, Norwich City right-back Max Aarons makes his debut on the star-studded list along with Chelsea midfielder Gilmour, who burst onto the scene under Frank Lampard's stewardship.

Ethan Ampadu, who is currently on loan at RB Leipzig from Chelsea, makes the list for a second successive year, while Arsenal's William Saliba is being tipped for the award.

Other notable nominees include Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies, Barcelona's Ansu Fati and Real Madrid's Brazilian duo Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes.

Last year's winner, Joao Felix, fails to make the list for the award again.

Real Madrid target Edoardo Camavinga makes the list after a brilliant breakout year with Rennes but there's no place on the list for Birmingham City's wonderkid Jude Bellingham.

The Golden Boy award was established by Italian publication Tuttosport in 2003, and sees players voted for by top European news outlets.

The list is whittled down to just 20 courtesy of a public vote, before a panel of 40 journalists from a range of countries and publications select the overall winner.

Whoever is declared winner will join esteemed company, with many of European football's biggest names having scooped the award in the past.

A fresh-faced Wayne Rooney lifted the shimmering trophy aloft in 2004, before handing it over to none other than Lionel Messi the very next year.

In recent years the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Raheem Sterling have called the honour their own.

The most recent Premier League star to win the trophy was Anthony Martial in 2015, who was deemed European football's most promising talent after completing his switch from Monaco to Old Trafford.
