Man Utd are plotting a £40million move for Bayer Leverkusen star Leon Bailey
Manchester United are giving serious consideration to a summer swoop for Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to add an attacking midfielder to his ranks ahead of next season - with the likes of Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish among the big money names linked with United.
However, Sportsmail understands Bailey is emerging as a transfer target for the Old Trafford club.
Bayer value the 22-year-old, who has three years left on his current deal, at around £40million - a significantly cheaper price than Sancho and Grealish.
And with the financial constraints caused by the coronavirus crisis, Bailey is being considered as more cost effective alternative.
The 22-year-old is naturally left-footed, but is comfortable with both feet and has pace to burn, which is an obvious attraction for Soljskaer.
His comfort with either foot means he can play on either flank or in a central attacking role.
The fact Bailey has Champions League experience is also an attraction for the United boss. Bailey has scored seven goals for Leverkusen so far this season.
Sportsmail revealed that United's number one target Sancho looks set to stay at Dortmund for another season with the German outfit refusing to budge on his £100million asking price.
Amid financial uncertainty posed by the pandemic, United are unwilling to go that high and while they are in a stronger position than most clubs, they would prefer to spread their money out across a number of stars.
Jamaican-born Bailey began his career with Genk before moving to Leverkusen in 2017, and has since made 110 appearances and scored 24 times.
This season he has suffered with muscle injuries that kept him out for a chunk of the season early on, but he has still managed to score five league goals and grab two assists from just nine starts. His best campaign came in 2017-18 when he netted nine goals and laid on six assists.
