Rashford's first coach lavishes praise on 'iconic' Manchester United striker

Marcus Rashford has been lauded as 'more than just a footballer' amid his efforts to pressure the government into reversing their decision over the food voucher scheme.

The Manchester United striker's first coach, Dave Horrocks, helped nurture Rashford's talent as a youngster at Fletcher Moss Rangers and spoke with immense pride at his former player's activism.

Rashford has written an open letter to MPS, urging them to make a U-turn on the decision to stop providing meals to help low-income families during the school summer holidays.

The scheme was brought in in March while schools were shut under coronavirus lockdown.

Rashford raised £20m for charity when partnering with FareShare and continues to ramp up pressure on the government.

Horrocks told Sky Sports: 'I'm not exactly sure he realises how powerful a message he has sent out.

'We know a lot of players do a lot of good work that we don't get to hear about but for him to stand up and do what he has done is just tremendous, he's inspirational.

'To say we are proud of him is an understatement, we really love what he's done.

'For him to have grown into this mature, young man beyond his years, people forget he's still only 22, is brilliant.

'There's a bigger message than him just being a Premier League footballer too - he's an icon that kids will look up to for good behaviour, the right habits and sending out the right messages.'

In his letter to MPs, Rashford wrote: 'The government has taken a "whatever it takes" approach to the economy - I'm asking you today to extend that same thinking to protecting all vulnerable children across England.

'I encourage you to hear their pleas and find your humanity. Please reconsider your decision to cancel the food voucher scheme over the summer holiday period and guarantee the extension.'

He later took to Twitter, heartened by the response he had from supporters to his letter.

Rashford wrote: 'Wow, just got home from training and I’m blown away with the support. It’s not over yet, let’s keep retweeting and tagging local MPs. We need to be the voice for those 200,000 children who have no choice but to skip meals today, I refuse to give up #maketheUturn.

He then added: 'We aren’t beaten yet, stand strong for the 200,000 children who haven’t had a meal to eat today and keep retweeting #maketheUturn'.

The England international continues to fight for the cause while working hard ahead of a return to action in the Premier League.
