De Boer rates Man Utd's chances of completing Van de Beek transfer
Netherlands icon Ronald de Boer has discussed Manchester United's chances of signing Donny van de Beek this summer.
The 23-year-old Ajax star is one of the most sought after midfielders in Europe and shone this season with 10 goals across the Eredivisie and Champions League.
Van de Beek was previously linked with a £44.5 million transfer to Real Madrid and he was reportedly preparing to make the move to the Spanish capital.
But Los Blancos have withdrawn from the race to land his signature amid the financial uncertainty caused by the coronavirus outbreak.
United are now understood to be in pole position to sign the Netherlands international this summer, and de Boer believes van de Beek would be a shrewd acquisition.
"When you hear these clubs pass by, I know your heart will beat faster," de Boer told FOX Sports. "Maybe this train will never pass by anymore for him.
"If Real Madrid again decide not to report themselves at Donny, then I can understand it if he decides to go to Manchester United instead.
"On the one hand, I understand that Real Madrid are hesitating a bit.
"Another club could think, ‘hey, an interesting player, maybe we can get him for a little less’. For example Manchester United.
"Solskjaer has indicated that he wants to go in a new direction and wants players who are humble, their heart is with the club, a team player.
"I think he is tired of the Pogbas running around. He wants players like Donny van de Beek."
Ajax CEO and United club legend Edwin van der Sar confirmed United's interest in van de Beek this week.
“It’s clear that clubs like Real Madrid and are Manchester United are showing interest in Donny van de Beek," he told NOS - though he warned that there would be no coronavirus-enforced discount on any Ajax players.
