Utd will sacrifice Pereira to sign Van de Beek as Havertz alternative (Mirror)
Manchester United will sacrifice Andreas Pereira to land Ajax midfield target Donny van de Beek.
The 23-year-old Dutch star – also being chased by Real Madrid - has been on United's radar all season and, along with Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Kai Havertz, is one of Europe's hottest properties.
United scouted the pair frequently before the coronavirus pandemic shutdown football.
But with the transfer window set to open next month, United have to make a decision on whether Van de Beek or Havertz are realistic targets in football's new financial world.
Solskjaer is a big fan of both stars and believes they would seamlessly slot in to the ambitious, hungry, young dynamic he's created in United's dressing room.
La Liga giants Madrid were in pole position to land the Dutch international but the health crisis and priorities in other areas of their squad means their interest has waned – and United are back in the hunt for van de Beek.
But Solskjaer has been told he'll have to sell to make room for Van de Beek – and that's put the future of 24-year-old Belgian-born Brazilian Pereira in the spotlight.
Pereira, who signed a new £45,000-a-week four-year deal last summer, has figured strongly this season in place of long-term absentee Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay, who missed two months of the season after sustaining a knee injury against Newcastle on Boxing Day.
But with Pogba and McTominay fit again and Bruno Fernandes and Fred also regulars, Pereira's opportunities will be squeezed.
There would be plenty of Premier League interest in Pereira with Newcastle, Everton and West Ham all looking at the midfielder before he signed his new deal at Old Trafford.
Van de Beek would be a perfect fit for United. He's attack-minded, technically-gifted and scores and creates goals.
He scored 10 for Ajax before their season was ended , including one against Chelsea in the amazing 4-4 Champions League draw at Stamford Bridge earlier this season, and made nine assists.
And the upside for Solskjaer is that he would cost around £44 million – much less than the £75 million Leverkusen want for Chelsea target Havertz.
