Dortmund chief explains Sancho benching amid continued Man Utd transfer talk
Borussia Dortmund chief Michael Zorc has denied that Jadon Sancho was too distracted by Manchester United transfer talk to start against RB Leipzig.
Sancho was benched for Dortmund's 2-0 win over Leipzig in their penultimate game of the Bundesliga season on Saturday, only coming on in the 78th minute with his team 1-0 up.
The England winger's omission from the starting lineup poured fuel on the flames of speculation that he is on his way to United this summer, with the 20-year-old having been identified as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's top target.
United are not the only club to have been linked with Sancho, as Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City have all been credited with an interest.
Borussia's sporting director Zorc had raised fears that Sancho was no longer focused the day before the game against Leipzig, telling Ruhr Nachrichten : "It is clear that we are concerned. But I don’t want to talk about that now."
However, asked after the game why Sancho had only made the bench against Leipzig, Zorc insisted he was simply tired after starting the last four matches.
"We have had many injuries in the past few weeks and have not been able to rotate like other teams," Zorc told Sport1 .
"Jadon is completely tired and told the coach before the game that he had no energy to play 90 minutes. You saw that in the game."
There is now just one round of Bundesliga games to go this season, with Dortmund hosting Hoffenheim on Saturday.
After that a scramble for Sancho's services will surely ensue, despite the coronavirus crisis having a serious impact on the finances of clubs at all levels.
Dortmund will want at least £100m for their man, who has scored 17 goals and provided an incredible 17 assists in just 31 Bundesliga appearances this season.
