HOW LIVERPOOL DEFENDER VAN DIJK HAS INFLUENCED MAN UTD'S TRANSFER PLANS

Manchester United are to prioritise bolstering their defensive ranks this summer after seeing Virgil van Dijk's impact at Liverpool .

The Reds forked out £75million to bring the Dutchman to Anfield in January 2018, a fee many felt was over-priced at the time of his arrival from Southampton .

But the centre-back has enjoyed a stunning full season in Liverpool by helping Jurgen Klopp's men secure a Champions League triumph over English rivals Totenham.

His performances in the Premier League also saw him pip Manchester City superstar Raheem Sterling to the PFA Player of the Year accolade.

And according to the Evening Standard , United feel Van Dijk has turned out to be a bargain and they are now willing to invest heavily in their defence.

It is claimed, however, that they don't believe the move represents a watershed moment in regards to transfer fees for defenders.

Kyle Walker made a similar big-money move when he joined Manchester City from Tottenham in a £45m move, and it's the full-back area that United want to improve.

The Red Devils are now stepping up their pursuit of Aaron Wan-Bissaka but Crystal Palace are standing firm over their stance on the highly-rated right back.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a huge fan of the England U21 international and has earmarked him as one of his top transfer targets this summer.

Palace are expected to hold out for a fee approaching £60m, and Solskjaer is likely to encourage the board to stump up the money because he is such an admirer of the player.

He is of the opinion that Wan-Bissaka's stock is only likely to rise even more next season, and thus the club cannot wait any longer if they wish to buy him at a relatively affordable price.

Solskjaer is also interested in Thomas Meunier of Paris Saint-Germain, but he is likely to be hugely disappointed if Wan-Bissaka is not his first-choice right-back come next season.
