Van der Sar urges De Gea to make a decision over his Manchester United future

Man utd news update live:
Edwin van der Sar has urged David de Gea to make a decision over his Manchester United future as he continues to stall over a new contract.

De Gea's deal runs out at the end of this season and while he was expected to pen a new long-term deal over the summer, an announcement is yet to follow.

De Gea inherited the gloves at United from van der Sar and has won the club's player of the year award four times in eight seasons, but the Dutch goalkeeper, now chief executive at Ajax, has urged United and de Gea to put an end to the speculation one way or another.

"The decision needs to come at a certain point. It's taken a long time now, so it's a case of 'yes' or 'no' but I'm not a director of United, so..." van der Sar said.

"Other goalkeepers can also fill the gap," he said. "There are a few Premier League goalkeepers playing at the club who can also take the step up. I was 34 when I went to United, so there are lots of opportunities there."

"That happened to me, it happened to [Ryan] Giggs also, to everyone. Your form differs," he said.

"He has been for so long at such a high level, so at a certain point it gets noticed [when your form dips], maybe not the first two times, but then people start to write about it. But he'll be fine. He's a great goalkeeper."
