Man United gave up Van Dijk not because of Mourinho's decision

Man utd news update live:
Manchester United decided against signing Virgil van Dijk because they'd already trained their sights on one of three players.

Reports have emerged claiming Jose Mourinho passed up the chance to chase the Dutch defender during his time in charge at Old Trafford despite Van Dijk being flagged up to him.

But Mirror Football understands United had always seen the Holland international as being destined to leave Southampton for Liverpool.

Instead the Red Devils were keen to land either Napoli's Senegalese centre-half Kalidou Koulibaly or Tottenham's Belgian international Toby Alderweireld.

After opting for neither, United then followed up on a recommendation from then-boss Mourinho to go for Harry Maguire this summer.

The England star eventually arrived at the start of August in a world-record fee for a defender, amid suggestions United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was convinced to break the bank for Maguire after seeing the impact Van Dijk had on Liverpool.
