Berbatov names the two players Manchester United should sign in January
Man utd news update live:
Dimitar Berbatov believes Manchester United should sign Mario Mandzukic and Gareth Bale in January in order to improve their fortunes in the Premier League.
United have made a poor start to the new campaign under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with some supporters feeling the club didn't strengthen enough during the summer transfer window.
Solskjaer opted not to sign a forward after allowing Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to leave, but Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial have all struggled with injuries.
As a result, United have been heavily linked with a move for Mandzukic who is reportedly open to leaving Juventus after falling down the pecking order.
Berbatov believes signing the 33-year-old would be a wise move and thinks his age should be looked at as a positive.
"They have the talent in the young players but at the same time you need someone like Mandzukic," he told Betfair.
"I think he is a really good football player and he hasn't played before in England but I hope if he comes he can straight away get into the rhythm of the Premier League.
"Zlatan Ibrahimovic was 34-years-old when he signed for United and he didn't have any problems. Mandzukic is a similar age and hope he could have the same impact if he signs.
"I think his age is a good thing, Martial, Rashford and Greenwood are all young players so they need that time and assurance that they don't need to worry and they can learn from the experience of Mandzukic."
As well as signing Mandzukic, the former Tottenham forward wants to see Bale back in the Premier League and thinks he would be a great fit at United.
The Welshman's future seemed uncertain following the return of Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid but he has since made a return to the team.
Nevertheless, United should push for his return to the country according to Berbatov.
He added: "Gareth Bale has apparently said that he wants to leave Real Madrid, it reminds me of a soap opera that has been on for so long, what episode are we on now?
"In the end he is probably going to leave at some point, and I would love to see him back in England at Manchester United or Spurs if they could afford him.
"But it's not always good to go back to the place where you were before because you aren't going to be as good as you were before, there is some kind of curse with that.
"Manchester United can benefit from his movement, his speed and he knows the Premier League so I think that would be a good move if it happens."
