Solskjaer has Garner and Williams as Man Utd first-team options

Man utd news update live:
Garner and Williams can earn first-team promotions

Manchester United fans were fully expecting to see youth given a chance in the Europa League, however few would have predicted that James Garner and Brandon Williams would be the two to start on Thursday night.

No matter which formation United decide to stick with this season both will have a valuable role to pay given the nature of their positions. The failure to sign both a left back and a central midfielder might have hampered the start to the new season, but the one slither of solace is that youngsters have now been given a chance.

Williams and Garner have arguably been the best players in the academy so far this season and against Partizan on Thursday night supporters finally got a glimpse of what they can offer the first team, and it was well worth the wait.

After a slow start to the match Garner settled in well with his passing range almost as impressive as a vital defensive block which prevented the hosts a clear chance at goal.

Many fans have argued Williams should be starting in the first-team ahead of Luke Shaw before the end of the season, and although that remains fanciful thinking, his contribution for the opening goal was one which is rarely seen from the senior left-back.

Thursday's match might be a world away from the physicality of the Premier League, but Solskjaer certainly has two more youngsters he can rely on based on their latest showings.
