Sir Alex Ferguson phoned Man Utd transfer target Maguire with important message

Man utd news updates live:
Harry Maguire once received a phone call from none other than Sir Alex Ferguson, back when he was at Sheffield United.

The centre-back had just played against the Red Devils in the FA Youth Cup final of 2011.

Maguire's day was one to forget for the most part. The Blade's were beaten quite convincingly by United, who boasted the likes of Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard in their ranks.

And Maguire spent his evening in a Manchester hospital after he suffered concussion.

Manchester United sent the defender a first-team shirt as a gesture of good will. But it was a phone call from Ferguson a few days later that really lifted the young defender's spirts.

According to Andy Mitten, writing in UniBet, Ferguson spoke to Maguire on the phone and instructed him to work hard and keep his head down.

Ferguson then reportedly told the centre-back that if he took his advice on board he would one day play at the highest level.

Maguire was said to have been delighted by the call and found a new confidence.

This helped him move through the ranks at Sheffield United before he later signed for Hull and then joined Leicester City.

Maguire was the subject of a £70million bid from Manchester United this week.

The Foxes rejected the offer but United remain keen on landing the centre-back, who is reportedly interested in signing for the Red Devils.

Whether the two clubs will find a financial compromise remains to be seen, but the story is proof Ferguson also had the ability to spot talent.
