'He brings so much energy': Cole believes Mount deserves further England chances

Ashley Cole believes that Mason Mount deserves further opportunities for England after impressing for Chelsea while Phil Neville claimed he is better than Jack Grealish and James Maddison.

Mount has enjoyed an impressive breakthrough season with the Blues and was particularly influential in his side's 3-1 victory against Manchester United in the semi-finals of the FA Cup as he found the net.

The midfielder has already been capped six times by England at senior level and Cole, who was at Derby with him last season, believes that Mount should be heavily involved for Gareth Southgate's team.

Speaking on BBC Sport, Cole said: 'He wants to listen, if you want to criticise him he understands it. He's willing to learn. He should be around the England team. In the England team they've got a lot of youth, and what he brings is so much energy.'

England haven't played since November last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, but it seems very likely that Mount will be part of Southgate's thinking when the Three Lions return to action in September.

There is much competition for places in the England side, with young players in various positions making an impact.

But Neville believes that Mount is now ahead of the likes of Aston Villa's Grealish and Leicester's Maddison in the pecking order.

Neville added: 'I put Mount in that bracket with Grealish and Maddison and I personally think he is the best out of the three'.

Before turning his attention to England, Mount will be determined to conclude the campaign strongly with Chelsea, who, in addition to their FA Cup exploits, are also seeking to ensure that they finish in the top four in the Premier League.
