Gary Neville hails Utd's lethal counter attack for third strike against Brighton

Manchester United fans were treated to a thrilling display as they overcame Brighton 3-0 on Tuesday, with their third goal rightly attracting plenty of praise.

United continued their excellent form and their quest for a Champions League spot thanks to Mason Greenwood's opener before Bruno Fernandes scored twice at the Amex Stadium.

Fernandes' final goal got everyone talking as he emphatically finished off a fantastic counter-attack in the 50th minute of the Premier League encounter.

The counter-attack started from Harry Maguire winning a header in United's penalty area to Nemanja Matic spraying a wicked pass on the volley to Greenwood, who then floated a delightful ball into the box for Fernandes to smash home.

And following the emphatic strike, Gary Neville could hardly contain his excitement, labelling it the 'perfect' goal from start to finish.

Neville told Sky Sports 'The speed of this counter-attack... it's a really good header from Maguire - height, distance - then it's brilliant from Matic and they're away.

'Rashford's speed means Burn has to cover and it leaves Fernandes at the back post. Has he got the technique? Everything is perfect. What a goal.'

Neville even went as far as comparing the goal to the one United scored in their Champions League semi-final victory at Arsenal in 2009, when Cristiano Ronaldo finished off a sweeping move involving Wayne Rooney and Park Ji-Sung.

However, when commentating, Neville accidentally credited Nani for involvement in the goal when he in fact meant Park.

'Well that was Ronaldo, Rooney and Nani. Arsenal, back in the late 2000s,' said a delighted Neville. 'The speed of that counter-attack!'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also hailed United following their emphatic display, insisting his side played some 'exceptional' football.

When describing the third goal, the Red Devils boss added: 'Good defending on the set play and we know we've got pace and we want to go forward. The boys played some exceptional stuff.'

And on social media, United supporters couldn't hide their delight either, with many lauding the lethal counter-attack for their third of the night.

One fan wrote: 'I haven't seen us counter like that in years. Gary Neville said it on the commentary, but that goal was so reminiscent of the Rooney-Ronaldo-Park counter attack goal vs Arsenal. A joy to watch.'

Another United fan hailed: 'Bruno masterclass. Greenwood terrorising defenders. Old school United counter attacks. Good. Day.'

And finally, another supporter claimed: 'That's the best counter attack I've seen for a long time!! That Matic pass was mad #WHATAGOAL.'

Victory over Brighton has moved Solskjaer's side within two points of Chelsea and three behind Leicester as they hunt down a Champions League spot.
