Chelsea confident of signing Manchester United starlet Angel Gomes (Mirror)
Chelsea believe they are close to landing Manchester United starlet Angel Gomes.
The 19-year-old midfielder, an England Under-20 international, has recruited super-agent Pini Zahavi who is understood to have held talks with Blues transfer chief Marina Granovskaia.
Gomes is out-of-contract at United at the end of next month and has rejected a new deal worth £30,000-a-week.
United remain hopeful of tying the midfielder down to a new contract but Gomes wants regular first-team football after just six first-team appearances for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side this season.
Lampard remains a massive advocate of promoting youth at Stamford Bridge, with the likes of Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori and Reece James having all benefited from the former Derby boss’s philosophy.
Gomes captained England Under 19s to World Cup success in 2018 and only last month suggested he wanted to stay at United and win trophies.
“I've seen it over the years, coming up from the academy and being at United my whole career,' he said during a Google Hangout on the club's official website.
“It's what I want to go on to do – win trophies for the club.”
United had hoped Gomes would follow Tahith Chong in committing his future to the club.
Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said recently: "With Tahith we’re very happy he sees his future here, we can see a very good player there and we’ll give him time to develop.
"That is the same with Angel. We hope we can convince him in the near future and long term future that he’s a Manchester United player."
