Solskjaer slammed for neglecting Sir Alex Ferguson's Man Utd blueprint
Man utd news update live:
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been criticised by Tony Cascarino for not following Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United blueprint and signing a striker over the summer.
The Red Devils have already seen Romelu Lukaku leave for Inter Milan over the summer and now look set to lose Alexis Sanchez to the San Siro giants as well.
That leaves Solskjaer with just two recognised strikers in Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, both of whom Cascarino believes are not capable of notching 20 goals a season.
The former Chelsea forward pointed to United's rich lineage of formidable marksmen as reason for Solskjaer's naivety, name-checking the likes of Andy Cole, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Wayne Rooney.
He believes a failure to emulate Ferguson's approach of always possessing a prolific No. 9 on the books could prove costly.
In his column for The Times, Cascarino wrote: “Given they have allowed Romelu Lukaku to leave too I find it amazing United didn't sign a proper centre forward during the transfer window.
“Marcus Rashford is capable of the spectacular and has great potential but is yet to find consistency. Anthony Martial is another talented young player but I think he's most effective playing from wide, not through the middle.
“The bottom line is I don't think either of them guarantee 20 goals a season. After that, United have 17-year-old Mason Greenwood who is a highly-rated teenager but it's a massive leap to suddenly be United's third-choice forward.
“Through all their dominance under Sir Alex Ferguson and even with managers after him United have always had a four or more strikers. And they were always recruiting more.
“They had Andy Cole but they signed Dwight Yorke. They had Yorke but they signed Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez, Dimitar Berbatov, Robin van Persie. The list goes on and on.”
