Sutton: Solskjaer's lessons will make Rashford a master finisher
With every passing week, we are seeing more of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in Marcus Rashford.
The Manchester United boss was one of the best operators in the box the Premier League has seen. While he was not the quickest, his intelligence bought him an extra yard. He had a picture in his mind whenever he was through on goal and it was the same with Rashford against Brighton.
Under pressure, with two defenders and the keeper between him and the goal, Rashford could have panicked.
Instead he kept his cool, using the defenders to block the keeper’s line of sight and bending the ball around them into the top corner.
Solskjaer says he has told Rashford to ‘settle down’ before pulling the trigger and that finish showed his renewed confidence.
It would not surprise me if Solskjaer is working with Rashford after training to hone his finishing.
Gianluca Vialli did the same with me at Chelsea. When I was going through a rough patch, he took me out for a couple of afternoons to work on volleys. He said the key was the connection, not the speed at which you hit the ball.
That was going through my mind two years later as I struck a volley for Celtic against Juventus — my best ever goal. Without Vialli, I’d never have scored it. The lessons Rashford learns with Solskjaer will help him become a master finisher.
