RONALDO & PLAYERS MOURINHO HAS GONE TO WAR WITH

RONALDO & PLAYERS MOURINHO HAS GONE TO WAR WITH

Mourinho has a history of falling out with high-profile players at clubs he has managed with his on-again, off-again rift with Pogba resurfacing

Jose Mourinho as a manager and as a person is as abrasive as they get in the world of football, with his trophy-winning legacy at the likes of Chelsea, Inter and Porto inseparable from the often sensational and spectacular ways in which he has fallen out with others

That personality has played against him in the past, like when the Special One was forced out of Real Madrid several clashes with key members of the squad.

Mourinho is also known for his infamous third season 'implosions', in which his time at a club goes pear-shaped after his second year.

Along the way, he has fallen in and out with players in instances that have become high-profile, from accusing Cristiano Ronaldo of having too large an ego and dismissing young talents Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne.

Goal has rounded up Mourinho's past bust-ups with his own players from past to present, bringing you all you need to know.

Paul Pogba – Manchester United

Despite having the summer of a lifetime and lifting the World Cup with France, Pogba's start to the Premier League season wasn't as smooth sailing – clashing several times with his manager. Pogba's form for France hadn't been the same for Man United, with the midfielder dropping cryptic messages in the press about the uncertainty over his future and hints about Mourinho's unruly treatment of the player. The relationship between the two took yet another rocky turn after Mourinho gave a team talk stating that Pogba would never again captain the side following the French international's criticism over the coach not adopting enough of an attacking style on the pitch.

Mohamed Salah – Chelsea

The Egyptian superstar is one of a few "the one who got away" stories involving Mourinho, after the two worked together at Chelsea but failed to really hit it off. Salah made just 13 Premier League appearances for Chelsea the course of almost two seasons and was considered a 'flop', with the Portuguese failing to figure out a way to deploy the forward effectively. But now, of course, the Egyptian has made his way to Anfield, illuminating the Premier League with his breakout debut season that saw him score 46 goals in all competition, breaking numerous records in the process – as well as Mourinho's heart.

Romelu Lukaku – Chelsea

Mourinho has never had a great record in developing young talent, and didn't give much of a chance to the then 19-year-old Lukaku at Chelsea, who eventually moved to Everton. There was never a rift between the two during their time at Stamford Bridge, however, and Lukaku's clearly proven his worth to the manager after Mourinho shelled out  £75m to purchase the forward from Everton for Manchester United in 2017.

Kevin De Bruyne - ChelseaChelsea

Kevin De Bruyne is another Mourinho unsuccess story during their time at Chelsea, with the Belgian midfielder being so frustrated at not being given ample playing time that he transferred to Wolfsburg. After three years in the Bundesliga, the midfielder returned to the Premier League to join Manchester City, where he has emerged as one of the most pivotal members of the title-winning team under Pep Guardiola.

Iker Casillas – Real Madrid

Mourinho's time at Real Madrid was embroiled in frustration and anger towards the end of his time at the Bernabeu. The Portuguese manager lost the support of the fans when he froze club verteran and talisman Iker Casillas out of the club, which, in turn, created division inside the dressing room. Mourinho fell out with Sergio Ramos and Pepe as well as part of the domino effect, and was a sour turning point in the coach's career. He was vilified and left Real Madrid in a state of disgrace in 2013 during his third season at the club – a term in which he has a tendency to self-combust.

Bastian Schweinsteiger – Manchester United

After Mourinho was appointed Man United boss in 2015 following Louis van Gaal's dismissal, he made it clear that he the former Bayern Munich and Germany captain was not to be part of his plans. Schweinsteiger played sparingly for United and was immediately demoted to playing for the Under-23 team. Mourinho was criticised for his treatment of such an experienced player, and the German returned to first-team action towards the end of 2016 – but made the move to MLS Side Chicago Fire just a few months later.

Pedro Leon – Real Madrid

Pedro Leon was an emerging talent when he arrived at Real Madrid aged, 23, but was soon transferred to Getafe after accusing Mourinho of treating him unfavourably. According to the Guardian, Mourinho told Leon that he wouldn't play him even if he was the only man left behind should their team plane crash without him in it.

Cristiano Ronaldo – Real Madrid

Ronaldo and Mourinho have an uneasy relationship, dating to their days at Real Madrid. The Portuguese boss is understood to have fallen out with the striker after accusing him of being too "over-confident", with Mourinho preferring to issue instructions to Ronaldo through his assistant coach, Rui Faria. Mourinho then snubbed Ronaldo in a recent documentary about mentor Sir Bobby Robson, stating: “Ronaldo Nazario, the best Ronaldo ever!”

Juan Mata – Chelsea

Juan Mata and Mourinho never saw eye-to-eye at Chelsea, with the Spaniard apparently unsuitable in the role that the former Chelsea boss wanted to deploy him in. He sold Mata to Manchester United in January 2014, but it was the luck of the draw when the two were reunited in 2016 after Mourinho was appointed successor to van Gaal. Mata has eventually emerged as one of Mourinho's better players, though one can't forget the instance during the 2016 Community Shield when Mourinho subbed the midfielder on – before subbing him off again in the same half.

Luke Shaw – Manchester United

Luke Shaw had a falling out with Mourinho last season following an extended leg injury and was practically phased out of the squad. The 23-year-old struggled to retain a starting berth under Mourinho at United, with the manager saying on one instance that he had requested Shaw to be substituted because he was playing so poorly. Luckily, however, the England international has found himself in Mourinho's better books in recent times, despite speculation that the defender was looking to move to a new club over the summer.

Ricardo Quaresma - Inter

As has been a common theme for many of Mourinho's players, Quaresma was a young talent after moving to Inter (despite having somewhat of a failed spell at Barcelona). It didn't work out for him at Inter, either, and found difficulty appeasing his manager. “My biggest regret was joining Inter," he said of his time in Italy. "I felt on the margins of the squad and woke up crying when I had to attend training sessions." His career plateaued after his stint at Inter, though he was part of Portugal's Euro-winning squad in 2016.

Samuel Eto'o – Inter

Their time at Inter was more fruitful than their second spell together at Chelsea, when Mourinho made a joke about Eto'o's age when he managed him at Chelsea. "I have Eto'o but he is 32 years old, maybe 35, who knows?” Mourinho said about the striker, though he didn't realise that his comments were public (even better). The Cameroonian responded by calling him a "fool".
